Irem Somer, studied Political science and also media communication systems. She has been active member of “Association for Solidarity with Refugees” (Mülteci-Der), which is based in İzmir-Turkey and is a right based organization, since 2013. The main activities they carry out as are monitoring, reporting, lobbying and carrying out awareness raising activities regarding refugees’ life in Turkey and violations happening at the borders. They also provide legal counseling to refugees.
Irem is also part of Kapılar group, which is a free space in a neighborhood called Basmane whose inhabitans are mostly economically challenged refugees and migrants. There are aiming to create a community center to carry out activities, for both children and adults, workshops and educational events, from language learning to urban gardening projects, recreational activities and live shows by-and-for the community. Kapılar has a kitchen for anyone to use and they also welcome other groups, both local and transnational, to use the space for their activities.
